This has been an exciting week in learning in grade 2!
In Social Studies, we are learning more about the important animals that live in Nova Scotia. We are learning how to be effective researchers and how to organize our information. We have written about our animals, and create posters or pictures.
In Math, we are working on developing deep understandings on addition of larger numbers to 100. In grade two, it's important to know how to manipulate numbers and use place value to be effective mathematicians. We use manipulatives, like counters, number lines, and 100-charts to show addition. We will also practice using a standard algorithm of lining up numbers and adding when we understand why. Here's and example:
In Science, we are learning about liquids! Please ask your student about the experiments we perform, and try some at home.
In Language Arts we continue to develop as readers and writers. We are working on writing stories that have problems the characters can solve, and that have a beginning, events (middle) and an end. We often practice saying our stories out loud before beginning to write them. This helps us make sure our stories make sense and end.
