This week in our learning:
In social studies we continue to talk about and research more animals that live in the arctic. We are comparing them to the information we have already learned about polar bears, walruses and caribou. These animals are so interesting and have so many amazing features that help them to survive in the climate of Iqaluit. We are learning how important these animals were to the survival of the Inuit people a long time ago and in present day.
These ideas have inspired many of our writing assignments in Language Arts over the last week. Ask your student about what they have learned and written about. We are learning how to pick 'just right' books and working towards building our reading stamina by charting how long we can read to self without distractions! The goal is to read, read, read!
In Science, we are continuing to look at magnets. We are having fun exploring magnetic and non-magnetic objects. We are focusing on vocabulary such as magnetic, non-magnetic, repel, attract, north and south.
In math we are reviewing single digit addition using manipulatives and other helpful strategies like counting on, making ten and using number lines to help prepare us for double digit addition with and without regrouping. This will be tricky work and it would be beneficial for your student to practice basic facts at home to make this next step easier.
Next week we will be starting new units in gym. Ms. Hatch's class will be doing Dancing/Jump Rope. Ms. Fuchs' class will be doing throwing/catching.
Hope you have a wonderful weekend! See you next week!
Ms. Hatch and Ms. Fuchs
