This week in our learning:
Math: We are learning how to measure length using non-standard measurement tools. Your student might try measuring with paper clips, rods, sticks and our feet! We have also started using rulers and number lines to measure different objects around the classroom using centimetres (cm). We are continuing to develop our understanding of estimating using a known length, and making comparisons.
Science: We have started to learn about Magnets. Your student is exploring the interaction of magnets with a variety of materials found within their school environment.
Social Studies: This week we have continued to look at the diversity of Canada with a focus on the communities of Meteghan, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, Iqaluit and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Your student is learning about how the lifestyle of a community is influenced by landforms, bodies of water and climate, specifically in Nunavut, Iqaluit.
For example:
- The walrus is particularly suited to living in places like Iqaluit (lots of fat to guard against cold, tusks for pulling itself onto ice, fins for swimming, etc.).
- The Inuit people in Iqaluit depend on animals (walrus, polar bears, caribou) to survive.
Language Arts: We continue to work on learning how to write about ourselves. Key features of our writing include using finger spaces, capitals and end-punctuation, and ensuring we have complete sentences. Your student is also working on making personal connections to text.
Music: We have begun learning our Winter Concert music! Ask your student what song they will be preforming.
Gym - Mrs. Hatch's class is learning about Floor Hockey. Ms. Fuchs' class is learning dance.
Thank you for all your support at home!
Ms. Hatch and Ms. Fuchs
